Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2015

There’s nothing like the first time, even when you win the Stanley Cup four times in a row! HOF goalie Billy Smith helped lead the way as the 1979-80 New York Islanders finally delivered on their promise of incredible talent. Battlin’ Billy and fellow HOFers Denis Potvin, Mike Bossy, Bryan Trottier and Clark Gillies enjoyed their first sip from Lord Stanley’s prized silver chalice after Bob Nystrom’s overtime goal secured a six-game win over the Philadelphia Flyers in the Stanley Cup final, a first title that launched a dynasty on Long Island. The Isles’ first Stanley Cup win is beautifully commemorated by this 10-karat gold and diamond bauble that was presented to Billy Smith and weighs in at approximately 34 grams. One large diamond is set in a gorgeous blue stone on the tableau, which is encircled by “Stanley Cup Champions 1980” around the bezel. “31 Smith G” is stamped on a banner that stretches across the top of the left shank, with the Islanders logo over crossed hockey sticks below it. The right shank features a raised image of the Stanley Cup over the NHL shield. “10K” and two other symbols are stamped inside the size 11 band. Wonderfully preserved with sharp details, the ring displays proud wear that includes a few nicks to the top and left edges on that corner of the blue stone as well as a variety of scratches and dings to the gold band. This treasure celebrating the Stanley Cup win that launched the Islanders dynasty comes with Billy Smith’s signed LOA. Please note that this lot may be subject to a silent reserve.
