Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/20/2020
In the great tradition of 19th century sporting clubs, the Quebec Bulldogs were formed as an amateur hockey team in 1878, starring in various leagues as the burgeoning sport grew from a leisurely afternoon pond activity, to the speedy and rugged game that would emerge at the dawn of the 20th century. The Bulldogs would claim a pair of back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in the early teens, with a number of fabled stars representing the famous striped blue wool sweater including Paddy Moran, big, bad Joe Hall and the Phantom Joe Malone. These master photograph segments feature the 1915-16 Bulldogs just a few seasons before relocating to Hamilton. In two segments, with each featuring affixed individual 2” x 5 ½” photos, the larger is approx 9” x 17 ½”, with Moran, Malone, Jeff Malone (Joe’s brother), Mummery, Crawford, McDonald, a trainer, management member and one other, while the smaller 9” x 10” segment includes Hall, Smith, Marks and Joe Savard (spare). This unique master photo (in two segments) features one of the earliest and greatest clubs in history, with this surely the only example extant.
The affixed images display nicely, with expected wear along the perimeter of the mount. A number of the players have their name handwritten on the mount, with a few pinholes present as well. There is also a stamp from Dominion Photo over the reverse of the larger segment.
