Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2020
The late pop artist Andy Warhol, who painted a portrait of Gretzky in the early-Eighties, was asked what he saw in his subject: "As an artist, what I see in Wayne is great joy and energy," he said, adding, "I think it's great when a sports star can look like a movie star". This wonderful work, issued in 1984 and limited to 300 signed and numbered pieces, feature’s The Great One wonderfully depicted in Warhol’s unique and commanding style. At approx 32” x 39” and mounted to a larger 39 ½” x 48” backing, Wayne has signed over the bottom right, Warhol over the bottom left, with the limited-edition number of “48/300” to the left of the Warhol signature. Both signatures have been scripted in black marker, with each blending heavily into the dark background. Set in a custom made acrylic display case with full dimensions of approx 39 ½” x 3 ½” x 48”, the screen print displays beautifully, with light wear to both the case and print.
