Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018

A wonderful offering for the collecting community, we have a Toronto Maple Leafs alternate captain’s wool sweater that was worn by Allan Stanley during the 1960-61 NHL season, and amazingly, it’s been photo-matched! A partially attached label from long-time Leafs supplier and MLG resident Doug Laurie graces the inside seam, with the collar void of any tagging. Featuring a detailed felt Maple Leafs team crest with appliqued letters, a thick alternate’s “A” and “26” on verso in matching felt material has been utilized, with dual-white collar, sleeve and lower hem striping bands. The garment also sports four eyelet configuration on tie-neck construction, with this important to note, as this facet along with the absence of numbers on the sleeves and a felt team crest all point to a 1960-61 jersey as the Maple Leafs started wearing numbers on their sleeves in circa 1961-62, with the last year they wore a felt team crest circa 1962-63. Furthermore, prior to the circa 1960-61 season, the Maple Leafs wore three eyelets collars, also lending proper credence to a 1960-61 timeline. This impressive specimen should see spirited bidding.
A three-time NHL All-Star, defenceman Allan Stanley first experienced high-level hockey during the war years as a teenager with the Boston Olympics in the old EAHL, moving onto Providence for additional seasoning before spending seven seasons in Manhattan with the Blueshirts. Subsequent seasons would follow in Boston and Chicago before donning the iconic maple leaf, with an especially impressive four Stanley Cup championships won while in Toronto in just six years including the immortal 1967 victory that closed out the Original Six era and served as the Maple Leafs most recent championship. Ranked No. 60 on the all-time list of New York Rangers in the book 100 Ranger Greats, Stanley would be granted enshrinement within hockey’s hallowed Hall in 1981.
Measuring roughly 22” from armpit to armpit (size 44), heavy wear is present, with numerous holes over the front, reverse and sleeves, with additional heavy wear to the reverse numbers. Each elbow section is also quite damaged, with large holes present along with team repairs. We should also note that the sweater was most likely recycled for minor league use which was common for the day, with additional wear occurring at this time. An included numeric image has been matched to the particularities of the team crest, including the veins and the Toronto Maple Leafs lettering.
