Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/30/2021
Joining once again, in collaboration with the Montreal Canadiens, Classic Auctions is pleased to offer a large collection of artifacts and memorabilia from the storied club's comprehensive archives. A number of historic specimens direct from the famous team including unique displays that were once marvelously displayed in the hallowed Montreal Forum and later at the Bell Centre are available, with an endless array of legendary and monumental players featured that all proudly once donned the sacred jersey of the mighty Montreal Canadiens.
Wisely choosing a rookie Ken Dryden to backstop the Montreal Canadiens during the 1970-71 Stanley Cup playoffs despite the lanky superstar only seeing action in six regular-season games, Al McNeil also utilized Rejean Houle masterfully during the finals against Bobby Hull, with the result the Habs' 17th championship in franchise history. McNeil would have difficulties retaining his position due to his inability to speak French, and was replaced by Scotty Bowman for the 1971-72 NHL season. Originally displayed at the hallowed Montreal Forum and most likely later at the Bell Centre, we have a framed painting of Al McNeil by noted Habs artist Michel Lapensee. At approx 11” x 15” and executed in water colours, McNeil is beautifully depicted, with his name and tenure listed on the matte. The artist has signed, adding the date (1992), with the work double-matted and framed to approx 19” x 23”. The unique painting is flawless, with some damage to the text on the matte and light wear to the frame including a few blemishes. An LOA from Classic Auctions will be included.
