Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021

Remembered for the career-ending injury suffered at the hands of legendary hard-as-nails defenceman Eddie Shore, Ace Bailey enjoyed eight seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs and serves as the first player in all of professional sports to have his jersey number retired. Used famously for a number of his contemporary issues in 1933-34 including World Wide Gum, O-Pee-Chee, Hamilton Gum and Canadian Gum, this photo encapsulated by PSA and authenticated as Type I was also used for his 1932-33 O'Keefe's hockey coaster. Unevenly cut at approx 7 ½” x 9 ½”, the glossy stock image pictures Ace in a game-ready pose in his Leafs wool, with trusty McNiece & Orchard “Extra Special” stick in hand. Editorial notes in pencil appear on the reverse along with a trio of date stamps (Jan 11, 1932, Dec 20, 1933 and April 18, 1957). The photo exhibits moderate wear with some spotting present along with the upper right corner torn away, with a number of surface lines and indentations visible. There is also a bit of wear to the PSA holder.
