Our consignor’s stupendous trio of significant rookie cards features Sidney Crosby’s coveted Upper Deck The Cup RC, limited to just 99 examples and from the high-end product’s first year, 2005-06. That’s the season that Sid the Kid began his illustrious NHL career and that cards like this beauty were chased by high-end box busters and collectors. Featuring a perfect blue ink autograph between Sidney’s image and a black swatch, the card rests in a thick Beckett holder and merited difficult-to-hope-for-higher 9.5 GEM MINT status. That’s the sum of the four sub grades which are as follows: Centering 10, Corners 9.5, Edges 9.5 and Surface 9. The back of the label also includes the grade of the autograph; a perfect “10”. Info on the reverse of the card will further add to the overall allure and reads in part, “On the front of this card is an authentic piece of a patch from a jersey worn by Sidney Crosby in an official NHL game.” As for Beckett statistics, they reveal that 76 such cards have been inspected and encapsulated by the company over the years and that just one “10” has scored higher than this example, which is joined by just eight other 9.5s. Arguably the best of his era and instrumental in bringing three Stanley Cup championships to Pittsburgh, Crosby will go down as one of hockey’s all-time greats, rendering his rookie cards forever popular. For those who would like to own the most important, it’s time to step up. To note are the light scuffs to the front of the holder, notably in the upper third and more evident just under the label.
