Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction - October 2007
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/23/2007
Exceptional and striking, this miniature Stanley Cup represents a
momentous season in the history of the Edmonton Oilers. Few hockey
observers paid much attention to the Oilers prior to the 1989-90
regular season or playoffs, the loss of Wayne Gretzky being
considered irreparable. However, with Wayne gone, Mark Messier took
leadership to the highest level, finishing runner-up to Gretzky in
the regular season scoring race and winning the Hart Trophy as league
MVP. After rallying to edge Winnipeg in the first round of the
playoffs, Messier and his mates swept Gretzky and the L.A. Kings,
before earning a trip to the finals with a six-game win over
Chicago. Backstopped by Bill Ranford, whose 16-6 playoff record and
2.53 GAA earned him the Conn Smythe as playoff MVP, the Oilers ousted
Boston in five games, Craig Simpson scoring the Cup-winner in
Edmonton’s 4-1 clinching victory at Boston Garden. Simpson led all
playoff scorers with 16 goals and tied Messier with a playoff-high 31
points. The names of the players, including the seven who made it
five Cups in seven years with Edmonton (Messier, Anderson, Fuhr,
Kurri, Lowe, Huddy & Gregg) are engraved on this mini Stanley Cup,
along with those of the team’s coaches and executives. Presented to
Oilers’ longtime director of public relations Bill Tuele, this
13” high silver-plated beauty is in outstanding near mint condition
and will come in its original soft blue pouch from trophy-maker
Boffey and a black NHL storage box. A letter of authenticity signed
by Bill Tuele will also be included with this extra-special trophy.
