Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/30/2021
Featuring the largest hockey arena ever used at the Olympic Games, the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary featured a record 57 nations competing with 1,423 athletes participating. Petro-Canada served as one of the event’s biggest sponsors, with this stunning limited-edition Olympic bronze statue’s creation attributed to the Games, and it originates from a high ranking Petro-Canada corporate executive in 1988. At approx 8 ½” x 2” x 5 ¼” and with a weight of 5 lbs, the Olympic rings have been fashioned in bronze over a base in matching material with the outline of the rings hollowed, with affixed individuals including one on mounted steed. Black felt is adhered to the underside, with the artist Nag Arnold signing the reverse next to the limited-edition number of “15/25”. Light wear is present throughout, with the felt slightly loose at one end.
It should also be noted that the high ranking executive the Olympic torch and additional items originate from went to Greece and was present for the torch lighting ceremony, and brought the flame back to Canada (with the flame carrier offered in a different lot). He also carried the flame in one of the relay legs with Alberta Premier Ralph Klein.
