Founded as a Crown Corporation in 1975, Petro-Canada is now a retail and wholesale marketing brand subsidiary of Suncor Energy. Based in Calgary, Petro-Canada was one of the biggest sponsors for the 1988 Winter Olympics. Originating from a high ranking Petro-Canada corporate executive in 1988, we have a small collection of Olympic material including framed silver coin and pins sets, an Olympic Sun Ice winter jacket and official track suits (2). First, the silver coin display is just under 13” x 23”, and features 10 mounted $20 silver coins ($200.00 face value total), with most showing some tarnishing. The winter jacket sports Olympic tagging with “XL” sizing, with embroidered Petro-Canada, Olympic and Sun Ice crests over the left breast, while the track suits differ slightly in colour, with screened logos over the left breast and reverse of each. The framed pin set is 16” x 20” and contain 63 pins along with a plaque and limited-edition number of “1116 of 1988”.
The jacket and wind breaker sets show just very light wear, as do the framed displays. It should also be noted that the high ranking executive the Olympic torch and additional items originate from went to Greece and was present for the torch lighting ceremony, and brought the flame back to Canada (with the flame carrier offered in a different lot). He also carried the flame in one of the relay legs with Alberta Premier Ralph Klein.
