Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/7/2017
Highly collected due to both their diminutive stature and extremely wide selection available, vintage pucks can come in a variety of categories, with rare game-used examples the most sought after. We have an impressive collection of Art Ross, Viceroy and CCM WHA game pucks totaling 24, along with 33 additional examples featuring the rebel league. Included, we have 4 1972-77 Viceroy white screened-logo pucks, 3 1975-77 Viceroy rubber logo examples, 3 1974-75 Art Ross Professional reverse pucks, 5 1975-76 Art Ross WHA reverse pucks, along with a pair of 1974-75 CCM white WHA logo examples. We next have single pucks, with a 1974-75 Czechoslovakia white WHA logo, a 1976-77 Viceroy orange WHA screened logo, a 1974-75 Art Ross blank reverse (most likely a practice example), 1974-75 Viceroy WHA rubber reverse, a 1974-75 CCM small orange reverse, a 1974-75 CCM large orange reverse and a 1972-73 CCM WHA puck. This item is relisted from our spring 2017 auction as Rob Bullock from BC (Canada) failed to honor his bid.
The full list of what’s included in this large WHA puck collection includes 4 1972-77 Viceroy white screened-logo pucks, with Edmonton, Quebec, LA and Indianapolis, 3 1975-77 Viceroy rubber logo examples for the Bulls, Toros and Stingers, 3 1974-75 Art Ross Professional reverse pucks with Chicago and Minnesota (2 different), 5 1975-76 Art Ross WHA reverse pucks for New Emgland, Houston, Phoenix, Denver and the Racers, along with a pair of 1974-75 CCM white WHA logo examples, for Cleveland and Indianapolis. We next have single examples, with a 1974-75 Michigan Stags Czechoslovakia white WHA logo, a 1976-77 Indianapolis Racers Viceroy orange WHA screened logo, a 1974-75 Minnesota Saints Art Ross blank reverse (most likely a practice example), 1974-75 Michigan Stags Viceroy WHA rubber reverse, a 1974-75 Phoenix Roadrunners CCM small orange reverse, a 1974-75 Cleveland Crusaders CCM large orange reverse and a 1972-73 Winnipeg Jets CCM puck. The WHA souvenir pucks total 33, and include 8 most likely 1974-82 (V3) CCM pucks with blank reverse w/Canada along each side, with Calgary, Phoenix, Ottawa, Birmingham, Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton and the Racers, followed by 8 1970s Czechoslovakia blank reverse pucks with San Diego, Baltimore (2), Denver, Birmingham, Calgary and Edmonton (2 different). Next, we have 4 1970s Bilrite pucks, with New England (2 different), Indianapolis and Cleveland (multi-signed), a 1972-73 Old Czech reverse puck with Philly, an unlicensed 1983-85 All-Star Game puck, a 1974-75 Czech blank reverse Cleveland puck, a 1975-76 Czech gold advertising Houston puck, 3 1974-76 Czech gold reverse pucks, with San Diego (2 different) and Cleveland and a 1972-75 CCM blank reverse Vancouver example. Rounding out the lot, we have miscellaneous examples for Cincinnati, Birmingham, Chicago, Houston (1990s) and Calgary (2000s).
The majority of the game pucks remain in pleasing condition, with expected wear to the logos from use, while the souvenir examples also exhibit wear on a number of examples. The notable exceptions include a 1974-75 Minnesota Art Ross Professional reverse example, with discoloration present, along with a 1974-75 Cleveland CCM white WHA reverse puck with heavy wear to the WHA logo. The 1974-75 Art Ross blank reverse Minnesota puck has wear to the logo, while the 1975-76 Art Ross WHA reverse New England puck has a gouge out of the rubberized logo.
