You know what they say about firsts and lasts - there's something special about them. And what fond memories come flowing back to Canadiens fans at the sight of this miniature 1970-71 Stanley Cup. Jean Beliveau had already decided to retire following the ‘70-71 season. At age 39 though, he was at the top of his game, registering 76 points in 70 games. Then came his final hurrah as he led the Canadiens to an unexpected Cup title, upsetting the high-scoring Bruins in the quarter-finals. The turning point came in game 2 in Boston as Beliveau led a memorable comeback. With Montreal down 5-1 in the 2nd period Beliveau scored 2 goals and set up 2 others including John Ferguson's winner in a crazy 7-5 victory. The Canadiens then eliminated Minnesota (6 games) and Chicago (7) and Beliveau skated off a winner, hoisting hockey's ultimate prize for a 5th time as team captain. His 16 playoff assists (to go along with 6 goals) were a new record and he left the game as the all-time playoff point scorer with 176. Another splendid career had begun as Ken Dryden won the Conn Smythe as playoff MVP. The Canadiens' performance earned team members mini Stanley Cups as mementos. The names of Habs' executives, players, coach Al MacNeil and the trainers are engraved on this silver-plated grail. It is in excellent condition with minor tarnish to the lip of the bowl and some silver loss inside of it. The sensational keepsake, the last from Jean Beliveau's playing days, will be accompanied by the all-time great's signed letter of authenticity. Very special indeed!
