Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023

Featuring an attractive design (at least in this writer’s eyes) as well as the names of players who had once dominated the era of the Original Six and some of those that would become the star power of the upcoming decade, Topps' 1969-70 release featured a checklist of 132-cards in total with the assembly featured here nearing completion with 120 of the 132-cards needed being present and accounted for. Additionally, the near-complete grouping is made all the much more appealing due to the fact that all of the included cards have been signed by the player that is featured over the front. Missing only the cards of 17-Henry, 44-Gamble, 45-Horton, 84-Hicke, 91-Hillman, 103-Irvine, 105-Rochefort, 112-Watson, 113-Woytowich, 114-McCreary, 128-Williams and 131-O'Shea for completion, the near-set is paced by PSA graded specimens of key cards depicting players such as Bobby Orr (HOF 1979 - PSA EX 5), Gordie Howe (HOF 1972 - Dec. 2016 - PSA NM 7), Serge Savard (RC - HOF 1986 - PSA NM 7), John Ferguson (Dec. 2007 - PSA VG-EX+ 4.5), J.C. Tremblay (Dec. 1994 - PSA VG-EX 4) and Gump Worsley (HOF 1980 - Dec. 2007 - PSA VG-EX+ 4.5) with all of the autographs gracing their fronts, a mix of vintage and modern signed signatures, also been certified by PSA/DNA as well. With the rest of the PSA graded offerings including the cards of players such as Jean Ratelle (HOF 1985 - PSA VG-EX+ 4.5), Gary Bergman (Dec. 2000 - PSA VG-EX 4), Bill Flett (Dec. 1999 - PSA EX 5), Danny Grant (Dec. 2019 - PSA EX 5), J.P. Parise (Dec. 2015 - PSA EX 5), Pit Martin (Dec. 2008 - PSA EX 5), Gerry Ehman (Dec. 2006 - PSA EX 5), Reg Fleming (Dec. 2009 - PSA VG 3), Carl Brewer (Dec. 2001 - PSA "Authentic") and Roy Edwards (Dec. 1999 - PSA "Authentic"), once again, all the signatures are done in a mix of vintage ballpoint pen and modern marker ink with all having been certified by PSA/DNA.
For the rest of the cards, all found to be in their raw ungraded form, the group of key's is paced by EX to EX-MT scope offerings of 10-Beliveau (HOF 1972 - Dec. 2014 - light corner wear), 30-P. Esposito (HOF 1984), 37-Gilbert (HOF 1982 - Dec. 2021), 62-F. Mahovlich (HOF 1981), 64-Delvecchio (HOF 1977), 70-Hull (HOF 1983 - Dec. 2023) and 76-Mikita (HOF 1983 - Dec. 2018) while the card of Johnny Bucyk (HOF 1981) is seen as being in the proximity of EX shape with light corner wear worth mentioning for accuracy. For the rest of the raw notables, those of 11-H. Richard (HOF 1979 - Dec. 2020 - surfaces scratches at right border), 12-Hall (HOF 1975 - corner wear), 22-Cheevers (HOF 1985 - small ding at bottom right), 33-Giacomin (HOF 1987 - light corner wear) and 55-Crozier (Dec. 1996 - light corner wear) are all seen as being in the vicinity of VG-EX to EX for their efforts while the cards of 51-Keon (HOF 1986 - corner wear and stamp on back) and 89-Parent (HOF 1984 - corner wear) are both around the neighbourhood of VG to VG-EX. Finally, the checklist card, which is unmarked and has been signed over the front by Boston Bruins head coach Harry Sinden is seen as being in the range of G to VG shape due to a crease.
For the remaining bulk of the cards making up the group, all found in raw ungraded from and featuring a mix of vintage and modern penned signatures over their fronts, the balance of the cards are generally seen as being in a mid-grade range condition state with some better of examples mixed in along with some that fall below the commonly seen standard that is present throughout. Including examples of Hall of Famers such as; Jacques Laperrierre (HOF 1987), Yvan Cournoyer (HOF 1982), Jacques Lemaire (HOF 1984), Bob Pulford (HOF 1991), Norm Ullman (HOF 1982), Harry Howell (HOF 1979 - Dec. 2019), Carol Vadnais (Dec. 2014), Glen Sather (HOF 1987 - Builder) and Leo Boivin (HOF 1986 - Dec. 2021) while deceased players who's signatures are found over their cards in the set include the likes of; Bob Plager (Dec. 2021), Jim Roberts (Dec. 2015), André Boudrias (Dec. 2019), Ab McDonald (Dec. 2018), Ted Green (Dec. 2019, John McKenzie (Dec. 2018), Fred Stanfield (Dec. 2021), Arnie Brown (Dec. 2019), Jim Neilson (Dec. 2020), Bob Nevin (Dec. 2020), Ron Stewart (Dec. 2012), Murray Oliver (Dec. 2014), Bob Baun (Dec. 2023), Doug Jarrett (Dec. 2014), Gilles Marotte (Dec. 2005), Pat Stapleton (Dec. 2020), Doug Mohns (Dec. 2014), Jim Pappin (Dec. 2022), Kenny Wharram (Dec. 2017), Charlie Hodge (Dec. 2016), Larry Hillman (Dec. 2022), Jean-Guy Gendron (Dec. 2022), Jim Johnson (Dec. 2021), Bill White (Dec. 2017), Ross Lonsberry (Dec. 2014), Eddie Shack (Dec. 2020), Dean Prentice (Dec. 2019), Ken Schinkel (Dec. 2020), Bob McCord (Dec 2016), Charlie Burns (Dec. 2021) and Ray Cullen (Dec. 2021). Additionally, extra signed cards of 34-Brown (1), 48-Selby (1), 79-Howell (1), 90-Hillman (1), 124-Miszuk (2) and 129-Burns (1) are also included and it should be noted that while most of the autographs display without issue and remain fully legible, a small number do show a good amount of fading from age while all the PSA holders remain in good condition, mostly showing light scratches or scuffs worth pointing out for accuracy.
