Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/21/2017
Referred to by collectors as Cowan Tiles, these 6” by 6” ceramic affairs were reportedly meant to be sold at NHL arenas but speculation is that licensing issues led to them never being released to the public, and despite most apparently being destroyed, a fairly large number has survived. Over 100 different players exist, with “SCREENART PRODUCTS LTD. – Made in Canada” appearing on the cork backing of each. Along with a device to hang the pieces. “H.M. Cowan”, thought to be the artist’s name, joins the colourful images. We have 7 examples from the series for your collecting pleasure, including HOFers Norm Ullman and Red Kelly, along with Jerry Toppazzini, Dennis Riggin, Ron Stewart, Tom Williams and Murray Balfour.
Each tile comes in its original box, with some featuring the players name handwritten, while others include a number written along the side in red. The tiles all survive in beautiful condition with just the odd minor blemish, with the Ullman, Williams and Riggen tiles void of the back hanging hook, and with residue along the edges, there is the possibility of former mounting. The Williams example also sports glue residue on the reverse.
