Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/7/2017
Always boasting a strong international contingent despite a population of under 6 million, Finland is considered one of hockey’s “Big Six” along with Canada, Russia, Sweden, Czech Republic and the US, with the small nation last winning gold at the 2011 World Championships in Slovakia. We have a second-place medal from the 1961 "Finland ice hockey championship", along with a late-1980s/early-1990s national team jersey. At 2 ¼ in diameter, the gold-coloured medal features an embossed generic player with “Suomen” (Finland) “Jäaakiekkomestaruus” (ice hockey championships) on the obverse, along with "II" and "1961" on the reverse. A number of scratches and marks are present to both sides, with light edge wear also present. The jersey appears to be of the same quality with matching characteristics to the examples worn by the national team during the era, with Tackla labeling along the collar, with a second rubberized example over the right breast. “Suomi” appears across the top of the chest above the affixed team crest, with heat-pressed sleeve and verso numbers. With just some minor wear to the screened-on “Suomi”, the jersey remains in wonderful condition.
