Oh, Canada! Some of the scarcest and most tantalizing collectibles for player collectors, and others, were produced in the country, with Ted Williams enthusiasts surely enthusiastic about the opportunity offered here. No similar Williams 1939 World Wide Gum V351 Premium (the Canadian version of Goudey’s R303A issue) has ever been graded higher in the history of PSA than this example which earned EX-MT 6 recognition. Three other EX-MT 6s show up on the PSA Population Report and one was part of a complete set of 25 that realized $31,000 in a 2021 Heritage auction. Just seven total submissions of the V351 Williams are on record at PSA and when all cards/players are tabulated, just 120 have been slabbed, with but six scoring higher than EX-MT 6. Numbers for the Goudey Premiums issued in the U.S. tell of 20 Williams examples, the highest being a Pop 1 NM 7, followed by three at EX 5. A sepia image of Williams captures the immortal as a rookie, with young Ted in 1939 smacking 31 homers and driving in a league-high 145 runs (the first rookie to lead the league in RBIs) while batting at a .327 clip – a sensational start to a without-parallel career! Although there was not a Rookie of the Year award in ’39, Babe Ruth reportedly declared Williams to be the ROY, with Williams later being quoted as saying that that was “good enough for me.” Good enough for a Teddy Ballgame museum-caliber collection is this riveting specimen, with “Lithographed in Canada” appearing on the lower back. Light scratches to the front of the PSA holder are to note. Good luck in securing this exceptional scarcity.
