Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/14/2022
A fascinating collection of (intact!) survivors from the 1930s that took years to build boasts several legendary pre-war stars – we do not recall offering so many full hockey matchbooks at one time – our consignor is deserving of kudos. Although “silver” Diamond Match matchbooks came first, we’ll jump to the “tan” contingent since its lineup is impressive. Rangers’ stars Frank Boucher, Ching Johnson, Bun Cook and Lynn Patrick are featured on books that have all 20 (blue-tipped) matches still present, with just one match gone from books picturing and profiling Bill Cook and Cecil Dillon. Full matchbooks of St. Louis’ Vic Ripley and Black Hawks Johnny Gottselig and Art Wiebe are joined by ones with red-tipped matches and featuring Chicago’s Marty Burke, Mush March and Paul Thompson, while the star of stars, Howie Morenz, is pictured in a Black Hawks uniform in a matchbook missing five matches. There’s also a duplicate Bill Cook book with five matches remaining, while Morenz shows up on two similar matchbook covers, one superior in condition to the other. Two different “types” of Aurele Joliat covers are present, while the silver matchbook cover roster includes Hall of Famers Boucher, Clapper, Tiny Thompson and Sylvio Mantha, and is completed by Georges Mantha and Bruins Chapman and Sheppard. Finally, three full silver jobs feature green-tipped matches and Black Hawks Taffy Abel, Doc Romnes and Jack Leswick, while no matches are in a Bill Cook book. Like we said at the top, “fascinating!”
