Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Fall 2022

Another stirring ensemble from our consignor’s splendid stash of pre-war cards, the likes of which are very infrequently offered in complete set form, this Canadian Gum gathering is sure to tempt both collectors and dealers. The set is highly-popular, coveted and challenging to assemble as the letters at the bottom of each example could be cut off and used to spell the names of hockey teams, in order to be exchanged for a home hockey game, thus reducing the number of intact specimens. Rookie cards of a dozen Hall of Famers contribute to the 41-card RC roster, with ten cards recently returning from PSA premises and the slabbed lowdown as follows. Best is Red Dutton’s RC at EX+ 5.5 (Pop 2 with 5 higher), followed rookie cards of Maple Leaf legends Ace Bailey and Red Horner at VG-EX+ 4.5. Three at VG-EX 4 are also considered RCs; Dit Clapper, Lionel Conacher and Bun Cook, with Aurele Joliat and George Hainsworth examples also 4s and just a notch above Howie Morenz (VG+ 3.5). Completing the encapsulated portion is Canadiens’ goalie Lorne Chabot at GOOD 2. …..Among the raw rest are 14 crease-free cards in the VG, VG+ and VG-EX realm, including Connell, Day and 12 non-HOFers, with enough corner wear and/or light creasing sending another dozen to G or G+ and Larry Aurie, Busher Jackson, Charlie Gardiner and Babe Siebert RCs most notable. Five others display similarly but are affected by light staining or minor back damage, while the nine that complete have more serious flaws. Included are Nels Stewart RC (trimmed), Charlie Conacher RC (stamping on the front) and King Clancy (multiple creases), with Dave Kerr the only ugly (P) entry. All in all, captivating black and white images surrounded by appealing vivid red combine for an alluring assembly that is worthy of considerable contemplation, with the new PSA holders all without scratches.
