Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016

Before the term “Trolley Dodger” became ubiquitous and formal in Brooklyn, the National League baseball franchise forever remembered as the Dodgers were known by many names, including the Grays, the Bridegrooms, the Superbas and the Robins. 1916 would prove to be city’s first World Series jaunt, taking on the formidable Red Sox of Boston. Well remembered historically for the genesis of Babe Ruth’s eventual 29 scoreless innings pitched, the Series would go five games and would be closely contested until Game 4, when Larry Gardner’s inside-the-park three-run homer insured a 6-2 victory. With no comeback in sight for the Robins, they would succumb in Game 5 for the third Red Sox Series win in 5 years. From the final game of the 1916 World Series that witnessed the then-largest fall classic crowd of 42, 620 - we have a program that’s been scored in pencil for Game 5.
At 7” x 10 ½”, the program exhibits a commonly seen vertical crease that runs front to back, along with other assorted creases and wear. There is some staining to the bottom of a few of the pages along with wear to the spine. It appears that the covers were detached at one point and they’ve been re-attached in an unobtrusive manner that’s not noticeable at first glance. Other pages also have some “restoration” present, but this in no way stands out, with the program still exhibiting good visual appeal. We needn’t emphasize that century old World Series programs, especially for prominent and historical years, rarely come available on the market. This example, while not a high grade survivor in original condition, should still appeal heavily to any serious World Series collectors.
