Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/20/2020
Featuring players who competed in the National Hockey Association, the Pacific Coast Hockey Association and Ontario leagues, the C57 issue is undoubtedly the most challenging to track down and complete among the three early tobacco card sets, with its black and white images found by many to be somewhat haunting. Definitely riveting and thought-provoking, with the lineup led numerically and in terms of importance by the #1 card of hockey immortal Georges Vezina. One of just two cards here graded by PSA, it is a PR 1 example with rounded corners and multiple creases but at least is not one of the missing cards, with the vast majority superior and dominated by VG 3 (17) and VG/EX 4 (11) representatives assessed by SGC. The condition leader, at EX 5, is superstar Fred “Cyclone” Taylor, joined by one other 5; #35-Carl Kendall. Highlights of the VG/EX 4 contingent are Hall of Famers 5-Tom Dunderdale, 15-Sprague Cleghorn, 25-Ernie Johnson, 26-Ernie Russell and 49-Marty Walsh, with goalie 13-Bert Lindsay also notable. The rookie card of 2-Punch Broadbent is among nine VG 3 cards picturing HOFers, the others being 16-Joe Hall, 17-Jack MacDonald, 23-Gordon Roberts, 24-Jimmy Gardner, 27-Percy LeSueur, 29-Jack Darragh, 46-Jack Laviolette and 48-Joe Malone. Five at GOOD 2 include 19-Hyland and 34-Gerard, while a half-dozen FAIR 1.5s feature 18-Moran, 41-Patrick, 44-Lalonde and 50-Odie Cleghorn. Completing at POOR 1 is Clint Benedict’s RC, an attractive but trimmed-looking Art Ross card (slabbed “A AUTH”) and the other PSA entry; 39-Broughton (VG-EX 4). Please see our website for further details and more images of these fascinating relics, sure to excite their new owner – this is a tremendous opportunity.
The three cards not present are 8-Poulin, 36-Fournier and 45-Pitre. For those interested in the cards not already mentioned, they include VG/EX 4s of numbers 10, 12, 28, 30 and 42, along with ten VG 3s; 4, 6, 7, 9, 14, 21, 22, 32, 33 and 47. There are also three at GOOD 2; 11, 31 and 38 and a pair of FAIR 1.5s; 37 and 40. To note is the mix of “white” SGC labels (19) and those exhibiting toning (26).
