Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024

In just his second season as a Montreal Canadien after being discovered in Chicoutimi, Quebec was Georges Vezina when he appeared on coveted cards such as the one offered here, with the legendary goaltender remarkably never missing a regular season or playoff game from the time he joined the Habs until he became ill during the season opener in 1925-26, a 15-year run that totaled 325 consecutive games. Having recorded the first shutout in National Hockey League history and the first netminder to be awarded an assist, Vezina backstopped the Canadiens to Stanley Cup triumphs in 1915-16 and 1923-24 and now lives on via a trophy in his name that is presented to the NHL's top goalkeeper as voted on by the league's general managers. Card #38 in Imperial Tobacco's gorgeous C55 release from 1911, this particular copy of Vezina's key rookie card has earned the esteemed mark of EX-MT 6. Retaining beautiful colours and clean surfaces despite its age of 113 years, less-than-expected light wear is observed at the edges and corners that in no way detract from the beauty of the card. Having been freshly graded at PSA, of the 235 Vezina C55 rookie cards submitted to the company over the years, just eleven (11) have scored a higher grade than this pop-16 example, including a single EX-MT+ 6.5, nine (9) NM 7's and a lone NM-MT 8. A stunning example that seldomly comes up in this condition, don't let this gem of one of the game's forefathers pass you and your all-important collection by!
