Topping all scorers at the 1987 Canada Cup with 21 points in 9 games, Wayne Gretzky would earn MVP honours at the tournament while leading his nation to gold. This stick used by The Great One hails from the tournament, and it has been team-signed by members of Team Canada. Wayne’s preferred Titan TPM2020 model with “W. Gretzky” stamped and heavily faded handwritten “99”, the original black tape remains over the blade and white now yellowing tape over the handle and knob. "1-002" is also stamped to the lower underside along with date code "9 7809" – which stands for September 9, 1987 (the only remaining games of the tournament after September 9th were the Finals games, played on September 11th, 13th and 15th), with “Canada Cup 1987” handwritten in red over the lower shaft. The front side of the shaft has been shaved-down to accommodate the signatures including Gretzky, along with fellow HOF members Lemieux, Bourque, Messier, Hawerchuk, Coffey, Gartner, Murphy and Grant Fuhr. Originally obtained from one of the 1987 Team Canada trainers, an LOA from Classic Auctions will accompany.
The additional signers include Barrie Stafford, Eddy Palchak, Normand Rochefort, Brent Sutter, Doug Crossman, Brian Propp, Rick Tocchet, Kelly Hrudey and a few others. The signatures are period from the era and all appear to be executed with the same pen, with the majority somewhat faded. We should also note that one of the “9”s of “99” on the Gretzky sig doesn’t show. The stick itself shows great game-use, with wear to the taped section of blade including a tear to the tape along the underside, with numerous marks and abrasions to the shaft including red paint transfer over the lower section.
