Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2017

Fascinating photos here bring forth the little-known story of how a few NHL regular season games were played at the auditorium in Atlantic City during the 1929-30 season. NHL president Frank Calder was on hand for the group shot of the Ottawa Senators and New York Rangers which is erroneously dated March 15, 1930. It was actually December 28, 1929 when the Rangers scored a 3-1 victory over Ottawa. The Americans and Senators then played March 15th, with Ottawa winning 8-7. Syd Howe’s presence in the latter photo (he was called up in January and played his first 12 NHL games with Ottawa) confirms our speculations. The crystal-clear images of legends Clancy, Connell, Nighbor, Boucher, Cook, Ching Johnson and Worters render these 11 ½” x 14 ½” framed treasures coveted indeed.
With just light wear noticeable beneath the glass of each, they both appear in their original frames with stickers from Ottawa framer Frank Jarman on the reverse. There is also moderate to considerable wear to the frames themselves, with areas where the finish has been rubbed off.
