Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/20/2020
Hailing from just the fourth season of legendary Habs' superstar Maurice Richard, this large and rarely-seen photo feature’s the 1946 Stanley Cup champion-Montreal Canadiens. Finishing first overall at the conclusion of the 1945-46 NHL season, the Canadiens would lose only a single post-season contest on route to hoisting Lord Stanley’s hardware for the sixth time in franchise history. At approx 11 ¼” x 17”, the glossy stock print features the full team membership including the Rocket, along with fellow HOF members Bouchard, Blake, Durnan, Lach, Reardon, O’Connor, coach Dick Irvin and GM Tommy Gorman. Text across the base states “Holders of the Stanley Cup – Canadiens – World’s Champions”, with “1946” beneath. We should note that we have only handled a few examples of this image previously, including from the Emile “Butch” Bouchard collection, with the probable likelihood that these high quality prints by noted lensman Rice were only produced to present to players.
While condition is not ideal, the photo displays wonderfully, with all four corners intact and no material loss. There is some surface wear along with a number of horizontal creases and small surface cracks, with a small edge tear along the top. There is also some toning and mild staining over the reverse.
