Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/30/2021
Featuring unique images found no place else, and featuring the game’s all-time toughest player, we have a massive and comprehensive American Hockey League Springfield Indians and Springfield Kings negatives collection of approx 7,500 – possibly much more - spanning from the 1940s to 1970s (the total is an estimate, as there are 17 period Kodak boxes, with approx 500-600 negatives per box for the ones we checked, with most of the boxes labeled). Originating from the estate of Springfield Daily News staff photographer Stephen Lemanis, who appears to have also moonlighted privately, as there are many posed shots in the collection, with 4” x 5” and 2 ¼” x 2 ¼” negatives accounted for, along with later 35mm negatives. Eddie Shore is featured in numerous images including several in uniform, as well as other noteworthy players and HOF members including Earl Siebert (coached the Indians during the late-1940s), Chuck Rayner and Gump Worsley. This vast collection ultimately serves as an historic archive for the Springfield Indians/Kings franchise.
As mentioned, the boxes are all labeled with the particular season, with most housing both 4” x 5” negatives – with these mostly featuring individual players, team photos and group shots, along with 2 ¼” x 2 ¼” strip negatives (the posed shots of individual players appear to be from player sets for that year). Also, while the collection ranges from 1937 to 1977, the bulk of the images range from 1946 to 1970. The majority of the negatives show age and storage wear, with some suffering from water damage. This is the largest offering regarding the AHL or Springfield franchise that we have ever handled.
