Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/30/2021
A requirement for any advanced hockey autograph collection and crucially historic for both the evolution of Canada’s foremost sport and the development of the nation, this military commission from 1878 has been signed by Her Royal Highness Queen Victoria, and the individual responsible for the Stanley Cup, Lord Stanley of Preston. At roughly 12” x 16” (open) and dated October 13, 1878, the folded antique document features wonderful period script, with affixed seals over the upper left. Stanley has signed over the bottom right, with the fountain pen signature displaying brilliantly and remaining completely bold with no issues. The Queen has signed over the upper left, with the large and majestic signature slightly faded but especially attractive. Arguably the most important signature in hockey, it has to be noted that this document suffers from soiling that appears to be mold, with this affecting the areas encompassing the seals, with permeation through the document. As conservation is needed to preserve the important piece, the opening bid is reflective of the cost that will be incurred.
The document exhibits prominent fold lines with minor separations occurring – something that should also be addressed through conservation, with even toning throughout. With Lord Stanley and Queen Victoria dual-signed documents normally selling in the $2,000.00 range, due to the conservation needed as previously mentioned, the opening bid has been set lower with the upcoming conservation costs in mind.
