Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/24/2021
Founded in 1911 and made up entirely of Icelandic players from two former Icelandic Athletic Club teams including the Vikings, the Winnipeg Falcons starred legendary Hall of Fame member Frank Fredrickson. Seven of the eight original Falcons enlisted with the Canadian Army during WWI, with the team most famously winning the 1920 Olympic gold medal while representing Canada – the first ever awarded for hockey. We have a pair of postcards featuring the legendary club including a team photo example. First, at approx 3 ½” x 5 ¼”, the real photo postcard pictures the full squad in Antwerp in 1920 in their Team Canada Olympic jerseys including Fredrickson, with a name written over the postal reverse along with a pencil notation. The second postcard is 3 ½” x 5” and depicts the starting six including Fredrickson in comical caricatures – common for the era – with “Falcon Hockey Team – Wpg – 1919-20” along the base. The same name is written on the reverse along with each player.
The real photo postcard exhibits light surface and corner wear with no creasing, with some toning to the reverse, while the second postcard sports edge and corner wear with a few small minor creases, with paper loss and glue residue on the reverse from scrapbook removal.
