Unequivocally one of the toughest and most skilled hockey players of all-time, Gordie Howe was also one of the most jovial, according to Minnie Shaw, the owner of a two-story boarding house situated just blocks from the old Olympia in Detroit. Ma Shaw, as she was known, housed over 195 Red Wings players between 1938 and 1959, and she once stated that out of her boarders, Mr Hockey was the “noisiest of all, he was a card around the house, he was always up to a prank of some kind”. This Northland Pro model stick used by Howe in the early-1960s was signed and given to Ma Shaw. “Howe” appears stamped over the upper shaft with “9” handwritten twice, with stamps from team supplier Olympic Sporting Goods gracing each side of the shaft. The original black tape remains over the blade and handle, with Howe adding a perfect dark black marker signature over the lower shaft.
Exhibiting great game-use with wear and puck marks to both sides of the blade, there is also additional wear, marks and abrasions to the lower shaft, with very small areas of both red and blue paint transfer visible. We should also note a couple minor hairline age cracks in the blade, with these mentioned for the strictest accuracy, with the stick remaining completely solid.
