Celebrating the athletic endeavors of the more civilized and formal Victorian era, we have a considerably rare collection of antique athletic medals totaling 8, all hailing from the late-19th century. Of high-quality construction, four medals with ribbons attached were produced for Montreal AAA members, with a pair issued for “Pole Leap”, one for 1884 the other for 1885, followed by an 1885 medal for “High Jump" and an 1880s medal for 2nd prize that appears to be for a sprinting contest, with the engraved image of a runner with finish line. This is followed by a pair for the Galt Caledonian Society from 1884, with a medal for “Hop Step & Jump”, while the second medal with ribbon attached was issued for “Putting Stone”. Finally, we have a “2nd Prize” medal for the “440 Yards” event, along with a medal with mounted beaver listing “2nd”, with the insert missing.
As mentioned, the medals are of the highest quality construction, with extremely well designed and intricate feature’s including engraved images of athletes along with gorgeously engraved script and detailed metal work. Obvious wear commensurate with well over a century of life is expected, with some of the affixed ribbons exhibiting fraying and light soiling. The MAAA medals are all roughly 4” in length give or take, with the smaller medals without ribbons in the 2” to 3” range.
The oldest and arguably most famous athletic organization in Canada, the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association was founded in 1881, beginning as a confederation of three sporting clubs: The Montreal Snow Shoe Club, The Montreal Bicycle Club, and The Montreal Lacrosse Club. Hockey came into the fray in 1886, with the Montreal AAA winning Stanley Cups in 1893, 1894, 1902 and 1903.
