Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
Penned shortly before being appointed the Governor General of Canada in 1888 - a position he would hold for just over 5 years - we have a letter handwritten by Lord Stanley of Preston, the man known to hockey fans as the benefactor of the Stanley Cup. Executed in fountain pen with an elegant script that is now, sadly, a lost art form, the single 7” x 9” fold-over sheet has text on three sides, with the soon-to-be-Governor signing “Stanley of Preston” and dating the correspondence “May 27/88”. With absolutely no issues for the signature, the fold-over sheet exhibits four additional fold lines, with just some very minor toning to the 130-year old letter the only issue.
