Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018

Our consignor’s exquisite trio of significant rookie cards features Sidney Crosby’s coveted The Cup RC, limited to just 99 examples and from the high-end product’s first year, 2005-06. That’s the season that Sid the Kid began his illustrious NHL career and that cards like this beauty were chased by high-end box busters and collectors. Featuring a perfect blue ink autograph between Sidney’s image and a splendid three-color swatch, the card rests in a thick scratch-free Beckett holder and has received a lofty mark of MINT 9 from the firm. That’s the sum of the four sub grades which are as follows: Centering 9, Corners 8.5, Edges 9 and Surface 9.5. The back of the label includes the grade of the autograph; a perfect “10”. Info on the reverse of the card will further add to the overall attractiveness and reads in part, “On the front of this card is an authentic piece of a patch from a jersey worn by Sidney Crosby in an official NHL game.” As for Beckett numbers, they reveal that 72 such cards have been inspected and encapsulated by the company over the years and that just one “10” and nine 9.5s have scored higher than this example, which is joined by 33 other Mint 9s. Arguably the best of his era and instrumental in the Pittsburgh Penguins’ three most recent Stanley Cup triumphs, Crosby will go down as one of hockey’s all-time greats, rendering his rookie cards forever popular. For those who would like to own the most important, this one’s for you.
