Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018

Maple Leaf Gardens offered a stage that Wayne Gretzky thrived on as hockey’s greatest performer. Growing up in Brantford, Ont., Gretzky always had a special place in his heart for the old home of the Toronto Maple Leafs throughout his amazing NHL career in Edmonton, L.A., St. Louis and New York. The Great One kept this Hespeler stick that he signed and dated after using it in his final game at Maple Leaf Gardens, in Toronto on December 19, 1998, and later gave it to a top executive. Wayne dated “Dec. 18, 1998 Toronto” his blue marker autograph low on the front of the shaft, just above the heel and his original tape job on the blade. This historic Gretzky gamer, which displays game use in the form of marks on the shaft, comes with an LOA detailing its provenance.
“Gretzky” is stamped on the shaft below Wayne’s original Jack the Gripper blue foam knob. The "55 8" factory coding pattern number is stamped below the gripper and again low on the back of the shaft, correlating to the "120-125 Stiff" flex marking lower down the shaft.
Gretzky had two points in his final game at Maple Leaf Gardens, assists on power-play goals by Adam Graves and Mike Knuble in the Rangers’ 7-4 loss to the Maple Leafs.
