Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2017

A unique, one-of-a-kind spine-tingling item is from a unique happening; the funeral of hockey icon Howie Morenz, held March 11, 1937 at the Montreal Forum. The public funeral took place after thousands of sympathizers had filed past the departed legend’s casket, placed at center ice of the building where the star had performed many of his unparalleled feats. Morenz’ reckless speed and headlong rushes touched fans in Montreal and wherever else he played, friend and foe all regarding him as hockey’s greatest player. Upwards of 2500 stopped to sign this “visitors” book and leafing through the almost entirely fountain pen signatures, one is in awe of its significance. Joining the signatures of hundreds and hundreds of ordinary folk, are those of several hockey luminaries. The big bold flowing sigs of Aurele Joliat and Joe Malone atop separate pages are definite highlights, as is a page that both “A.C. Siebert” (Babe) and “H. “Toe” Blake” signed. Other notables include Fred Taylor and Sydney Howe on the same page, T.P. Gorman, Howie Morenz Jr., Joe Malone Jr., Cecil Hart, Frank Calder, Basil O'Meara, Marlene Morenz and several other Morenz family members on the same page, H. O’Connor, and Sydney Howe again. Soft cover book is bound by blue string, measures 7-1/2” by 9-1/2” and is originally from the Morenz family. We should also note that signatures/pages have been removed from the book since last selling, with JSA stickers now on the reverse of some of the pages. Representing an immeasurable opportunity, it will be accompanied by a letter of authenticity signed by Howie Morenz Jr.
