Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2017

Some very intriguing and infrequently-seen items accompany the classic 1961-62 Shirriff coins and team shields here, with four coins still in their original clear cellophane packaging, like when they were pulled from dessert boxes back in the day! What a treat to hold and behold coins picturing 58-Dave Keon, 67-Val Fonteyne, 119-Al MacNeil and 120-Jean Gauthier. There's an actual box too, with the economy size revealing that two coins originally came in it. A Salada Foods' Hockey Club Membership Book is interesting and is actually an eight-fold schedule-like affair with English on one side and French on the other. Two different colorful newspaper ads invite consumers to "join the club" and inform of how one could win a trip to a Stanley Cup playoff game by collecting coins. Please see our website for more details and to hear about the condition of the coins and shields. Kudos to the assembler of this formidable collection.
The near set of coins, (missing just 35-Dollard St. Laurent for completion), is in rather nice uniform condition, with the vast majority in the EX to NM range, with no unsightly browning/toning of the backgrounds. We did not spot a single edge chip or crack while examining them, with an almost standard mix of Shirriff and Salada versions. The same is true with the four aforementioned examples in cellophane; Keon and Fonteyne are Shirriffs, with the two Habs being of the Salada variety. As for the six team shields, five of them have a few not-too-drastic edge cracks, with Detroit the only one missing a small (one-inch) section of the edge, to the right of the bottom tip. Five also have a pinhole at the top. Montreal does not and is free of edge chips, with however a couple of dings/indentations in the left edge. Meanwhile, the newspaper ads reveal that a team shield complete with 20 coins could be mailed-in for a chance to win a trip to the Stanley Cup and that the six team shields could be had for $1.25! Finally, a missing section of one end of the Shirriff Raspberry Jelly Dessert box is to mention. Still, quite "Lushus"!
