Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/21/2017
The oldest and arguably most famous athletic organization in Canada, the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association was founded in 1881, beginning as a confederation of three sporting clubs: The Montreal Snow Shoe Club, The Montreal Bicycle Club, and The Montreal Lacrosse Club. Hockey came into the fray in 1886, with the Montreal AAA winning Stanley Cups in 1893, 1894, 1902 and 1903. We have a trio of 19th century spoons featuring AAA logos, along with inscriptions on the reverse showing each was won by a club member in 1897 for bowling. At 4 ¾” in length, each spoon features the famous winged-wheel logo along the top, with “A.G. Gardner” and “Bowling” engraved on the reverse of each, with dates listed of “April 24-97”, “April 10-97” and “Jan 2-97”. Each is also marked “R. Hemsley Montreal Sterling”. With just expected wear from over a century of life, the bowl is just slightly bent to the left on one example.
