In the early-1990s, the state of Florida was blessed with the granting of a pair of NHL franchises. First, the Tampa Bay Lightning began life late in 1990, icing their first team in the 1992-93 NHL season. This was closely followed by the Florida Panthers franchise awarded to Blockbuster co-owner Wayne Huizenga in 1992, with the club’s inaugural season occurring in 1993-94. This lot contains a great Lightning and Panthers postcard and team card collection of approx 602 (split almost evenly between the teams), ranging from the early-1990s, to 2005-06, with approx 36 examples signed (16 for Tampa Bay and 20 for Florida). The breakdown for the items by year is as follows. First, for the Lightning, 1992-93 – 24 postcards including 7 signed, with the signed examples to include Bergevin, Reekie, Rheaume, Young, Cole, Creighton and DiMaio, 1993-94 – 13 postcards including 2 signed (Poeschek and Puppa), 1993-94 – 1 program insert, 1994-95 – 2 Tampa Tribune team cards (Puppa and Gratton), 1995-96 – 30 postcards, 1997-98 – 38 postcards, 1998-99 – 21 team cards, 1999-00 – 30 postcards including 1 signed (Lecavalier), 2000-01 – 41 team cards, 2001-02 – 35 team cards, 2002-03 – 30 team cards including 6 signed, 2003-04 – 39 team cards. The misc Lightning items include a photo signed by Terry Crisp. Next, for the Panthers, 1993-94 – 11 team cards including 7 signed, with the signed examples to include Clarke (VP), Cirella, Niedermayer, Skrudland, Vanbiesbrouck and others, 1993-99 – 78 postcards including 2 signed, 1999-00 – 32 postcards including 2 signed (Simpson and Pitlick), 2000-01 – 38 postcards including 8 signed, 2001-02 – 34 postcards, 2002-03 – 42 postcards, 2003-04 – 18 postcards including 1 signed (Keenan), 2005-06 – 27 postcards, 2005-06 – 18 Bank Atlantic team cards. The majority of the postcards/team cards in the collection are in beautiful condition with just light handling wear.
