Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
Dominant throughout the early-1950s while backed by an impressive line-up of HOF talent including Gordie Howe, Terry Sawchuk, Alex Delvecchio and Ted Lindsay, the Detroit Red Wings would win 4 Stanley Cup championships between 1950 and 1955. We have a vintage Red Wings wool sweater, with this desirable specimen originally seeing action in Motown during the late-1950s. Sporting no labeling and measuring-out across the upper reverse to roughly a modern size 48, the vintage wool has been styled with the famous winged-wheel team crest with embroidered detailing, with “22” placed over the sleeves and verso in single twill.
We should note that no players wore #22 in 1957-58 or 1958-59, but the sweater could have been worn in preseason/training camp. In 1959-60, both Len Haley (27 games) and Stu McNeill (5 games) wore #22, with Haley wearing #22 as well in 1960-61 (3 games). Surviving in gorgeous condition with bright red colouration and supple material, there is pilling throughout, with small repaired holes over the lower front and left sleeve. There is also a small rust-coloured stain over the right elbow. This beautiful Original Six Motor City wool is ready for display!
