Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
The Babe’s first manager while in pinstripes, Miller Huggins was reluctantly hired as Yankee skipper in 1918 by Jacob Ruppert, with Ruth apparently not respecting the former NL player reportedly for both his diminutive stature and inability to fight. We have an original 6” x 7” Type I media photo of the pair dated Oct 20th 1923, with Ruth appearing to be enamored by a ring Huggins is sporting. The date is crucial, as the Yanks were crowned with their first World Series Championship just days before, with pocket watches distributed to the franchise’s inaugural winners, leaving a mystery as to the importance of Miller’s jewelry. Editorial notes, an “Oct 20 1923” stamping and a newspaper clipping showing the published photo all appear on verso, along with an affixed PSA/DNA sticker - with a matching LOA to accompany.
A pair of edge tears that descend from the top are present, along with additional creasing and surface indentations. There is also some minor edge wear, with faints marks remaining showing where the photo was cropped for publication.
