The first championship ever held at the SkyDome in Toronto, the 1989 Grey Cup featured the Saskatchewan Roughriders taking on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, with the match won on a Dave Ridgway field-goal - forever-after known in Roughriders country as “The Kick”. The first 1989 Saskatchewan Roughriders Grey Cup championship 10K gold and diamond ring ever offered at auction for either a player or staff member, this highly desirable specimen was presented to defensive back Albert Brown.
Absolutely mammoth and constructed of 10K gold, the size 12 ring was produced by Balfour/Intergold and sports a hefty weight of approximately 55 grams, and features a raised Roughriders’ logo on the tableau encrusted with nine diamonds including two baguette diamonds along with a pair of green emeralds, with “Saskatchewan” above and “Grey Cup Champions” below. Zirconias have been placed over the base of the tableau and at each side, with an embossed Saskatchewan helmet with inserted diamond on the right shank, with “Brown” above and “4” below, while the left shank features an image of the SkyDome, with the score “43-40” below, and “Rider Pride” above with the date. The inner band is engraved with Brown’s initials. Exhibiting wear from use, the ring remains in gorgeous condition and sports a number of small scratches over the inner/outer band and shanks, with no visible gouges or damage. We should also note that all rings including this specimen were presented with zirconias, with complete diamonds an option if the players chose to pay for them.
Playing his college ball at Western Illinois, Brown saw eight seasons of CFL action, with seven seasons with Saskatchewan (1987-1994) along with a lone season with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1995. During the Grey Cup-championship season of 1989, Brown returned 73 punts for 849 yards, and returned 21 kicks for 600 yards. The Nebraska native also had 9 missed field goal returns for 164 yards, 50 tackles and a team-leading 8 interceptions. He also scored touchdowns in 4 different ways! Accompanied by a modern display box and a letter from the pawn shop to which Brown's pawned the ring in 1998, please take note that this stunning gold championship ring may be subject to a silent reserve.
