The third brewery to exist on the island of Montreal, Dawes Brewery began life in the city of Lachine in 1811, and by 1939, the company was renamed Dawes Black Horse Brewery in honour of it’s most popular ale. This lot contains a wonderful assortment of Dawes Black Horse items including serving trays, advertising, bottles and more. First, we have an exceedingly rare circa-1950s/60s Black Horse molded plastic advertising display (21” x 21”), followed by a framed Black Horse advertising calendar from 1943 (21 ½” x 31”) and a small circular “souvenir” of the 100th anniversary of the brewery in 1911, with an embossed tin image of George V and Mary affixed to a wooden plaque (the coronation also occurred in 1911). Next, we have 6 different Black Horse serving trays (12” to 13”), 3 Black Horse beer bottles, a small illustrated glass (5”), a serving tray paper insert, 4 bottle openers including a large figural example and more!
The plastic Black Horse advertising display presents beautifully with the horse remaining vibrant, with just light wear present, with a few small cracks along edges rectified with clear tape. The framed calendar displays wonderfully, with some rusting to the staples over the calendar pad visible, with moderate wear to the frame. The 1911 souvenir shows wear to the tin section and light wear to the plaque itself, with the bottles and glass showing wear commensurate with their former use. The trays hail from the 1940s, with 3 that are aluminum (one is in low grade) and 3 porcelain (there is surface wear to the porcelain examples including small areas of loss to the rims on 2 trays). Rounding out the lot, there are also 5 1920s-1940s Black Horse advertisements culled from magazines (10 ¼” x 14), along with a pair of illustrated cardboard coasters (toning to each), a Black Horse match booklet (no matches) and a trio of differing bottle caps (heavy wear to each).
