First distributed to soda fountains in the late-19th century, Coca-Cola tin serving and change trays were introduced in 1897, with the original early round trays – disappearing after 1905 – always featuring an attractive member of the gentler sex. Hailing from what’s considered the “classic” period of Coca-Cola trays by collectors, we have a desirable collection of five, originating from the 1920s/30s. Making their appearance in 1910, this group of “rectangular” 10 ½” x 13 ¼” trays includes “Summer Girl” from 1921 (image utilized for Coke’s only vintage baseball-themed calendar issued in 1922), “Soda Jerk” from 1927, “Bathing Suit Girl” from 1929, “Hostess Girl” from 1937 (Canadian) and “Beach Girl”, also from 1937. Ready to display and enjoy, all that’s needed is a cold and refreshing Coke.
The “Summer Girl” tray has a 1921 copyright date over the bottom left, with “Made in USA” at the center and “The H.D. Beach Co” over the bottom right. The tray retains a bit of its original glossy surface, with surface wear to the gilt over the rim at each corner, with additional wear along the sloping right side. There are also numerous scratches covering the image, with a bit of surface loss along her left shoulder, with a small reverse dent over the middle left inner border. The “Soda Jerk” tray sports a 1927 copyright date over the bottom left, with “Made in USA” at the right and “American Art Works Inc” at center. There are a few dings with surface loss along the gilt rim, with a reverse dent near the bottom. There is also additional surface wear to the image, with the tray apparently cleaned at some point. There is also some minor spotting, with a few small blemishes over the reverse. The “Bathing Suit Girl” tray has a 1929 copyright date over the bottom left, with “Made in USA” at the right and “American Art Works Inc” at center. The tray shows heavier wear, with no gloss left over the surface, with areas of damage to the image. Next, the “Hostess Girl” tray has a 1937 copyright date over the bottom left, with “Made in USA” at the right and “American Art Works Inc” at center. Retaining some of its original glossy surface, with surface wear over the rim, there is also a small area of loss just above the Coke bottles, with a few scratches and dings also visible. Lastly, the “Beach Girl” tray has a 1937 copyright date over the bottom left, with “Made in USA” at the right and “American Art Works Inc” at center. Retaining some of its original glossy surface, there are a few large dings to the surface and rim including over the right side, with scratches, a small dent and light pitting to the surface. The tray is also slightly warped and currently does not sit perfectly flat.
