Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/24/2021
Still widely recognized as the greatest upset in North American sports, the epic Team USA victory over the mighty Soviets at the 1980 Olympic Games in Lake Placid serves as not only one of the most memorable hockey moments, the triumph registers as an important cultural event for those south of the border, defeating their Cold War foes. This Team USA jersey is identical to the examples worn by the Americans at the 1980 Games, with this specimen prepared for pre-tournament use by Tim Harrer. Selected in both the NHL and WHA drafts of 1977, Harrer would only see action in four games with his nation before the start of the Olympics. A Norcon label with “XL” sizing is affixed to the collar, with a second Norcon patch placed just above the striping bands along the waist, with the jersey measuring-out to roughly a size 50. Styled with “USA” arching across the chest in red-over-white tackle twill, “18” appears over the sleeves and verso in matching material, with a single white tackle twill star placed over each shoulder.
Sporting no discernible game-use and surviving in breathtaking condition, the desirable sweater is ready for inclusion within any advanced American, international or Olympic collection.
