Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/7/2017
As those with even a passing knowledge of antique hockey sticks is astutely aware, examples made for goaltenders from the 1940s and earlier are extremely difficult to locate, with those more desirable specimens on the verge of celebrating a century of life practically non-existent. We have an exceedingly rare goal stick that was most likely produced during the first half of the Roaring Twenties. Unique in construction with a design that wasn’t favoured or widely produced, the shaft, top of the blade and most of the paddle are fashioned from a single piece of wood, with the topside featuring the “built-up” section along with a third piece utilized for the bottom half of the blade. “CSG 25” has been stenciled onto the top section of paddle, with tape present over the blade, paddle and knob.
A few cracks are present including one example that travels the full length of the blade, with some minor wear, loss and separation at the heel section. Despite these imperfections, the stick remains completely solid and would make for a killer display. As emphasized, goal sticks from this early period are extremely difficult to locate, with only a few comparable specimens handled by us in our 20+ years.
