Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
With the recent success of the Pittsburgh Penguins under the leadership of Sidney Crosby, it’s no secret that both vintage and contemporary items from the club are heavily sought, with some of the rarer-style 1970s jerseys commanding the most interest. We have an especially rare photo-matched Pittsburgh Penguins “white chevrons” captain’s jersey – named for the chevron pattern over the lower sleeves – that was worn by Ron Shock during his most productive season in 1974-75, where he secured 86 points in 80 games. A scarce single-season style that serves as THE RAREST OF ALL 1970s PITTSBURGH PENGUINS DURENE JERSEYS, a Rawlings size “48” label sits affixed to the collar, with no other tagging present. Styled with the heavily-embroidered Penguins team crest that saw use for two decades throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the vintage V-neck has been accented with black tackle twill sleeve and verso numbers with blue trim, with the captain’s “C” in single blue twill. The aforementioned blue and grey “chevron” pattern appears over each lower sleeve, with a garter-style fight strap utilized that has been modified.
Originally gifted by Shock to his best friend from high school, we should note that the modifying of the fight strap was contemporary to use, with evidence over the upper reverse of a former nameplate. A few faint marks are visible over the lower front, with wear to the added grey material that forms the chevron patterns over each sleeve, especially over the right elbow. There is also some missing threading along the top of the team crest, but it remains tightly affixed to the sweater, with team repairs over the lower front, upper reverse and sleeves (some are material backed), with the largest example over the right elbow. An included numeric image has been matched to the big team repairs on the right sleeve, and to the white mark on the lower front hem.
