Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/20/2020
Highlighted by a rarely seen colourized image of the 1932-33 Montreal Canadiens used to produce the highly sought puzzle from the same season produced by the Sportsman Company, this lot offers a collection of five vintage Canadiens team pictures, ranging from the 1929-30 season to 1939-40. First, the 1932-33 picture is approx 16” x 16”, with an image area of just over 12” x 12”, with the full team wonderfully depicted in colour, including Morenz, Joliat and Hainsworth. Next, we have a framed 1929-30 Canadiens team photo (14” x 20 ½”), with these examples originally produced for just players and staff, a 1934-35 premium team photo (8” x 12”),a gorgeous high-grade 1938-39 La Presse newsprint team photo (15 ½” x 22”) and a 1939-40 newsprint team photo removed from a newspaper.
The 1932-33 picture exhibits surface wear with a number of creases, but these are located outside of the image area for the most part, with the picture able to display as high grade within a quality framing. There are also pinholes along the perimeter, with toning over the reverse. The 1934-35 Rice image has the year written in marker along the top, with numerous creases present along with edge tears, with glue and paper residue over the reverse. The 1938-39 newsprint team picture remains in beautiful high grade as mentioned – rare for this issue, with toning the main concern, while the 1939-40 picture shows moderate wear with a vertical fold line. Lastly, the framed 1929-30 team photo is in poor condition with heavy water damage and soiling, with additional wear to the frame.
