Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024

Arguably the most famous and storied team from the earliest days of the sport and the first club in history to raise Lord Stanley's prized cup in 1893, the Montreal Hockey Team represented the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (AAA), known as the Winged Wheelers due to their winged wheel uniform - a design later borrowed by the Detroit Red Wings. Seven-time champions of the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada from 1886 until 1898, the Montreal AAA remained an amateur club throughout its existence. Winning Stanley Cup's in 1893, 1894, 1903 and 1904 as well as an Allen Cup in 1930, in 1932, the club would leave the MAAA association and become the Montreal Royals, eventually becoming a 'semi-professional' team in the Quebec Senior Hockey League with a junior entity also competing as well, with both operations ceasing to exist after 1961. Offered here, we present this stunning set of turn-of-the-century Montreal Amateur Athletic Association cufflinks. Made of 10K gold, the oval-shaped cuff links each include the AAA’s winged-wheel logo on one section and fancy engraved “R C” initials on the other. with "10K" stamped on one side of each piece adjoining the two sections together, what appears to read "HBS", for Henry Birks & Sons, is found stamped on the other side of each as well. Carrying a story along with them that states that the cufflinks were purchased from an antique dealer who got them from a lady that claimed that they were given for having won the Stanley Cup, it should be noted that there is no way to confirm this and the seen initials of "R.C" do not match those of anyone on the Montreal AAA roster, so the whole notion could simply be lore, but a wonderful thought if indeed true. In overall excellent difficult-to-expect-nicer condition despite their age of over 100 years, both show just light scratches/scuffs and wear with the heaviest amount found on the reverse areas of both.
