Skating on Broadway in two different stints, Mark Messier would serve the New York Rangers first in the 1990s, beginning with the 1991-92 season before moving on to the Vancouver Canucks in 1997. The Moose would return to The Big Apple the following decade, finishing out his career with his final four seasons spent with the Blueshirts. From his penultimate season, we have a photo-matched Rangers captain’s jersey worn by the Hall of Fame member in 2002-03. A label with “56” sizing graces the collar, with embroidered NHL and KOHO crests on the bottom hem and reverse necklines respectively. Styled with “Rangers” placed diagonally across the chest in red-over-white drop-shadow tackle twill, “11” appears over the sleeves and verso in matching material, with “Messier” arching across the upper reverse. A patch from MeiGray numbered “A02771” resides on the inside hem, with a matching LOA to accompany, and according to their population report, the jersey is a "Blue 2nd Regular Season" example.
Sporting a few dark marks over the lower front band, there are additional marks and board burns over each sleeve. Getty Image #52317219 (2003 season) has been matched to the black mark located on the lower edge of the red stripe on the right sleeve, the small faint mark above it and to the loose white thread on the top edge of the first "R" of "Rangers". The long loose white thread on the lower left edge of the captain's "C" is also visible in this photo (printed photo included with circled photo-matches). Next, Getty Image #52317432 (2003 season) has been matched to the loose white thread on the top edge of the first "R" of Rangers and to the long loose white thread on the top right edge of the first "1" of "11" on the left sleeve (printed photo included with circled photo-matches). This is followed by Getty Image #1846971 (Feb 15, 2003), matched to the loose white thread on the top edge of the first "R" of Rangers and to the long loose white thread on the lower left edge of the captain's "C", while Getty Image #1903272 (Feb 25, 2003) has been matched to the loose white thread on the top edge of the first "R" of Rangers and to the loose white threads on the top right edge of each "1" on the left sleeve.
