Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/19/2018
Another wonderful group of treasures from the personal collection of NHL star and NCAA coaching icon Red Berenson, we have a team signed stick used during the playoffs of the inaugural season of the St. Louis Blues in 1967-68, watches given for West Division MVP in 1967-68 and for the tenth anniversary of Red’s 6-goal night in 1968, an original 1970 painting given to Red, a framed late-1960s Blues team photo, a 1971 Old Blue Ribbon whiskey decanter in the form of a generic player in Blues’ colours and a 1962-63 Red Berenson Cowan tile. A signed LOA from Red Berenson will accompany these interesting items.
The stick is a Victoriaville Pro with “Berenson” stamped-on and “7” handwritten, with the original tape in place over the blade and knob. Both striping accents are damaged but intact, with approx. 22 red ink signatures across one side of the shaft, including HOFers Hall, Harvey and Al Arbour, along with Berenson, Melnyk, Roberts, St Marseille, McKenney, Crisp, Sabourin (smudged), McCreary, Keenan, Plager, Schock (smudged), Ecclestone, Cameron, Veneruzzo, Fortin, Caley and others. The 6 goal watch (no band) has a Blues logo over the face, encompassed by “St Louis Blues” and “NHL”, with “10th Anniversary 6 Goal Game Nov 7 1968-78” engraved on the reverse. In very good condition, we’re unsure if the 17-jewel watch works. The MVP watch was made by Patek Philippe, with heavy wear present, with “MVP West Division Gordon Red Berenson St Louis Blues 1967-68” engraved over the reverse. The Cowan tile exhibits light wear with a small chip along the bottom, while the large 15” whiskey decanter has “1971” over the underside, with just very light wear present. The Blues photo is set into a cheap wooden frame (17 ½” x 25”) with no glass, with considerable toning and foxing. The painting is also set into a cheap frame with no glass, with an attractive likeness of Berenson, with “Painted by Reg Weaver, Granite City Ill 1970” handwritten in pencil over the reverse.
