Attending the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union’s Montreal Bulldogs training camp in the early-1940s to stay in shape for his aspiring hockey career, Don Durno was a member of the Toronto RCAF Hurricanes Grey Cup championship squad in 1942 and later joined the Argonauts. Durno would serve as president of the Ontario Junior Football League from 1960-76, and was also the Argo alumni president for 27 years, from 1965-92. After football, Durno organized more than 50 charity golf tournaments, and helped raise over $4 million for the Charlie Conacher Cancer Committee. Obtained directly from his family, we have a Montreal Bulldogs jersey with use attributed to Durno in circa 1941. A Sporting Knit Montreal label is affixed to the collar along with a “40” size tag. Featuring full sleeve and shoulder bands in solid white along with the cuffs and collar, “67” is sewn to the sleeves and verso with a criss-cross sewing pattern in satin twill. 18 vintage publications from Durno’s personal collection will also accompany, including a 1959 Grey Cup dinner program.
Sporting moderate wear, the vintage jersey exhibits some bleeding of the red colour into the white sections, with a few small stains over each lower sleeve. Along with the 1959 Grey Cup dinner program (single fold line), the publications include four 1946 Toronto Indians programs in high grade – with each having a team photo that pictures Durno, along with a single issue that includes an individual photo, followed by a 1967 Grey Cup program (light wear), 1946 Balmy Beach Tip-Tops and 1948 Beaches Indians programs (light to moderate wear) and much more. The Montreal Bulldogs was a Canadian football team in the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union. The team played in the 1940 and 1941 seasons. During their first season the team did not have a nickname, and was simply called the Montreal Football Club.
