Winning their third Stanley Cup championship in 1943, the Detroit Red Wings would go through considerable changes as the war years waned, with a number of important players crucial to the success of Motor City joining the fray. Harry Lumley would backstop the club beginning in 1943-44, with Ted Lindsay coming aboard the following season and flagship superstar Gordie Howe making his Motown debut in 1946-47. Originating from the incomparable autograph collection of E. Robert Hamlyn, we have Red Wings team-signed sheets from 1944-45 and 1948-49, accompanied by a pair of letters on Olympia letterhead. At approx 5 ½” x 7”, each card stock sheet has been signed in two rows, with 16 black ink and pencil signatures for the 1944-45 sheet including Lumley, Lindsay, Siebert and others, and 21 blue ink for the 1948-49 sheet including Howe, Abel, Kelly and others.
The additional signers on the 1944-45 sheet include HOFers Syd Howe, Bill Quackenbush and Jack Adams, along with Liscombe, Carveth, Armstrong, Hollet, Mud Bruneteau and a few others, while the additional signers on the 1948-49 sheet include Jack Adams, Harry Lumley, Bill Quackenbush, Tommy Ivan, Ted Lindsay and Black Jack Stewart, along with Paile, Morrison, Gee, McNab, Pavelich, Gauthier, Reise and a few others. The signatures display well, with light wear to the sheets. The accompanying letters on Olympia letterhead are both from the 1940s and have been signed by Detroit’s Publicity Director. Each sheet shows toning, with holes punched along the top section of each to facilitate binder insertion.
